Milestone Achievements as ENT Head at SGH

As Head and Senior Consultant of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery) from 1992 to 1995 at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Dr Stanley spearheaded the development of Head & Neck Surgery and Rhinology (Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) in the Department. He also encouraged the development of Subspecialities in Otology/Neurotology , Paediatric ENT and Laryngology amongst other staff members.


Dr Stanley also set up an Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Laboratory for the training of younger surgeons and was instrumental in co-ordinating a Comprehensive Voice Laboratory and Clinic. A successful Post Laryngectomy Voice Restoration Program was set up after organising a Surgical Speech Rehabilitation Course.

International Peer Recognition

Dr Stanley was also honoured as Visiting Professor at the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at Stanford University Medical Centre, Palo Alto, California, USA in 1993. He gave lectures and had clinical discussions in ward rounds with Residents and Faculty members.

New Horizons in Private Practice

 

In 1995, Dr Stanley set up Stanley Ear, Nose, Throat & Sinus Centre at Gleneagles Medical Centre, one of Singapore’s premier medical centres, as Senior ENT / Head & Neck Surgeon and Director.

Stanley Ear, Nose, Throat & Sinus Centre was set up to provide comprehensive management of ENT,Sinus, Allergy and Snoring-Related conditions in both Adults and Children. Advanced Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for difficult sinus/skull base lesions are also performed.

Other services include Allergy Management, Paediatric ENT, Snoring and Sleep Apnea Treatment, Head & Neck and Thyroid Surgery, Hearing and Dizziness evaluation and treatment.

A programme for the treatment of bad breath (Halitosis) is available for those patients afflicted by it.

Dr Stanley is now looking towards setting up a Snoring and Sleep Apnea Centre as there has been a significant demand in this problem area. Strategic alliances with Regional and International Centres would greatly assist patients who are mobile , thus providing seamless follow up and exchange of medical knowledge. A National and Regional Rhinologic Centre would be a dream come through.

Post-Graduate Training in Scotland & England

Dr Stanley graduated from the University of Singapore with an MBBS degree in 1978. He was subsequently awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS) in 1982 in Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery after spending one year in Edinburgh on a Singapore Government Scholarship.

He then returned to practice at the Singapore General Hospital before leaving again in 1987 on another Goverment Scholarship for Advanced Training to sub-specialize in Head & Neck Surgery at Guys & Royal Marsden Hospital, Royal National Throat Ear and Nose Hospital, University College, London, United Kingdom.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and Allergy-related ENT diseases were two subspecialty interests, which he developed in the course of his training and practice of Otorhinolaryngology.

International Lectures , Teaching and Live Surgery

 

Dr Stanley has lectured extensively internationally. He was honoured as International Guest Speaker at the Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery Update in 1994 organised by the Canadian Society of Otorhinolaryngology in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. He also organised and directed an Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Course in Ho Chi Minh City and has been guest lecturer in Myanmar, Brunei and Western Australia. In addition to organising courses, Dr Stanley has performed Live Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for demonstration at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

International Societies

In 2001, he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery. Dr Stanley is also a Member of the American Rhinologic Society and the American Society for Head & Neck Surgery.

 

On-Going Academic Achievements

 

In the academic area, Dr Stanley has authored and co-authored numerous papers in both local and international journals. He also co-authored a chapter in a book "Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma" edited by V.F.H. Chong & S.Y. Tsao. He continues to lecture on numerous CME programs in Singapore and in the ASEAN region.

On a Personal Note

Dr Stanley is a Rotarian and Past President of the Rotary Club of Jurong Town. He was on the COMPASS Committee (COMmunity and PArents in Support of Schools) in the Ministry of Education from 1998 to 2000. Besides his community work, Dr Stanley is an avid golfer, watch enthusiast, and collector of fine writing instruments.
